Expanding Access To Community and Technical College

A strong future for TX-17 depends on an educated and skilled workforce. Community and technical colleges are engines of opportunity in our region, providing affordable pathways to good jobs and lifelong careers. Yet, too many young people face barriers to enrollment—from rising tuition and fees to lack of transportation or awareness about available programs.J. Gordon Mitchell believes every student deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of zip code or background. That’s why he’ll fight to:

  • Increase federal and state funding for community and technical colleges to keep tuition low and expand program offerings in high-demand fields.
  • Support dual-enrollment and apprenticeship programs that let high school students earn college credits and real-world experience, jump-starting their careers.
  • Invest in transportation and housing solutions to help rural students access campus resources and complete their education.
  • Expand financial aid, scholarships, and grant programs so cost is never a barrier to higher education.
  • Partner with local employers and unions to ensure curricula align with the jobs of tomorrow, fueling economic mobility for all.

With J. Gordon Mitchell’s leadership, young people across TX-17 will have the tools, training, and support they need to build a better life right here at home—strengthening our communities and driving economic growth for generations to come.
